Northern Queensland is looking down the barrel of Cyclone Yasi, said to be the the biggest and most dangerous weather event to hit us in generations. Luckily I'm on the lower edge of it all so unless it decides to move south in a major way I'll be fine. But I'm seriously worried about my friends north in places like Cairns, Townsville and anywhere in-between, the weather bureau is talking about a storm surge of anywhere up to six meters on top of the normal tide and Yasi is predicted to cross the coast right on top of one of the higher tides of the year.

There are storm surge maps available for Townsville and evacuation maps for Cairns, there's just so much of both cities that are expected to go underwater. Rainfall is also expected to break 1000mm (roughly 39 inches) in a day so that will not help matters at all.

Willis Island, a small dot out in the Coral Sea which is basically our early warning station for cyclones, has be the first bit of Australia to tangle with Yasi. The gear out there registered wind speeds of 300 km/hr (186 mile/hr) before contact was lost and Yasi was expected to keep strengthening.

You can buy a $499 ethernet cable from Denon, guaranteed to "bring out all the nuances in digital audio reproduction". Because digital signals really need an expensive cable to maintain all the "nuances" of a recording. *head-desk*

The people at Junkfunnel have far too much fun with technology, they've made themselves a Terror-o-meter, Phantasy Phone and my favourite the Suspicious Looking Device. A great way to get a free cavity search with any international flight.

It's a bit of old news, but apparently all you need to speak Australian is a quick shag from a wombat.

Ooof, it's been a long week. Last weekend was a long weekend with a public holiday on the Monday, unfortunately I spent it replacing the server at a client's. ;) And the late nights let me run down enough to pick up a fun little stomach bug that has given my gut the mentality of a spoiled five year old. It screams for food and when I give in it can't make up it's mind what to do, so far it's most popular tricks are to try and return  it or what feels like an attempt to compress it into a singularity to use as a power source.

But the bug seems to be fading now and I'm hoping that I can catch up on all the lost sleep over the weekend, gotta love the Sunday sleep-in. ;)

God damn, I haven't laughed this hard in a while. I just finished watching episode 9 of  Good News Week. It's well worth a watch if that link will work for people outside of Australia, it covers news mostly from within Australia but it touches on international affairs as well. :)

As you might have guessed from the title it's bucketing down here at the moment, there's something cozy about the sound of heavy rain on a tin roof. :)

As you may have guessed I've strayed a little from my original plan of just using this journal to vent when frustrated, I've done some exploring of the live journal community and I'm being drawn in. Plus I found [info]mock_the_stupid, I have to admit that venting is a lot more effective with a side-dish of mockery, so I'll probably be attempting to post my encounters in there from now on. :)

Ah 1AM my old friend, we really should stop meeting so often. Though admittedly if I did get my sleep patterns back to something that resembles normal I would miss the peace 'n quiet. :) It's a great time to explore the LiveJournal community, catch up on webcomics(I have over 100 in my bookmarks at last count), bang out some code, research an idea or just see if those crazy, kooky people at Steorn have managed to demo their free energy generator. All in all it's quality me time. :D

Ok, here we go. I originally only signed up for an account on Live Journal because I wanted to be able to post in a couple webcomic LJ's, but seeing as I've got the account I may as well use it completely. And I'm going to use it to vent. :) You see I've been working as a computer tech for about ten years now and as anyone who works in the industry knows the frustration tends to build up a bit. So I'm going to try this out as my release valve, I'll post about things that I encounter either as I remember them or as they happen. It's not to make fun of or belittle people, it'll just be here to keep me away from the gun-in-a-church-tower side of crazy. ;)

So, to get the ball rolling here's my first installment:

A customer called complaining that their computer was "making the sound of running water". I didn't bat an eyelid, figuring that it was probably just a noisy fan but when I arrived onsite there was definitely the sound of running water coming from the corner the computer was sitting in. The only problem was the computer was switched off, so I moved the computer away and sure enough the sound was coming from somewhere in the wall. I pointed this out to the customer and advised that they should probably get a plumber in ASAP as they probably have a serious leak somewhere and their response was, "Oh! That must be where all the water in the backyard came from."
